♥♥♥ EVENTS FOR JAN 2018! ♥♥♥

TORONTO QUEER SLOWDANCE - FIRST DANCE OF 2018 EDITION! - JAN. 6, 2018
RSVP HERE: https://www.facebook.com/events/318370575337107/

★★★

❤❤❤ You are cordially invited to Toronto's QUEER SLOWDANCE! - First DANCE of 2018 Edition! ❤❤❤

With a lending library of designated dancers for all you wallflowers, and a dancecard-booklet to set up dances in advance (should you choose to), Toronto Queer Slowdance has all slow songs, all night long! (Except for the occasional intermission when we play the fastest songs we can find!)

It's high school with a happy ending. Come and experience why slow is beautiful, and why love is not ironic.

PS. Fabulous and inspired attire, while desired, is not required. But it would be AWESOME and HAWT. As this is our First Dance of 2018 edition, you are encouraged to dress to impress in something NEW and BEGUILING, whatever that means to you!

Finally, you do not have to be queer to attend this party, but you must have an open mind, an open heart, and have open arms. Do keep in mind that many of our attendees fall within the LGBTTQIA continuum and may or may not be interested in dancing with the 'opposite' sex, so if you are stridently straight, this may not be the most receptive community for you.

Dovercourt house
805 Dovercourt Rd. (1 block North of Bloor, 3 blks. west of Ossington)
Saturday, January 6th, 2018
Doors at 9:30, Dance promptly from 10 PM - 3 AM.

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for DECEMBER! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

Hello Lovelies!

So this is the time of year that I like to get out my Vitamin D. And no, D doesn't stand for anything except vitamin D. (Sorry, pervs.) I also have a therapy lamp that my friend Amy gave me years ago. But the truth is, I kind of like winter. I find it bracing and invigorating. I am astonished that the world can get that cold, and during a blizzard sometimes I will step outside, wide-eyed and just marvel at all the drifts blocking doors and engulfing cars. And of course, I love going from the frigid outside into my cozy inside.

But I have to constantly fight against the impulse just to stay inside all the time. Which is why I'm often surprised to see all of you at my events. I don't know if any of you have ever watched Wall-E, but I kind of think that the endgame for all humans is how the humans are on that giant ark. Where we all have these self-enclosed mobility hovercrafts, and everything we really need is on the screen in front of us. I'm not saying that it's very healthy, but it's very human.

So this is me, thanking you in advance for actually leaving your houses and coming out to my weird events.

I have several this month. I am launching my new book, You Are Alice in Wonderland's Mum! in both Montreal and Toronto.  Or you could just order it direct from my publisher here!

I also have a Winter Formal edition of Toronto Queer Slowdance. And I am reprising my annual Montreal Christmas Caroloke Event where you come and sing karaoke in a crowd and we actually record it all and cut an album. Every year it gets more hilarious and raucous.

And of course I have my list of Other Quirky Events that you might like, further down in this email blast that are also filled with amazing things.

So I'm raising a glass to you, brave people who leave houses. You make it so much easier for me to leave mine and to meet you all.

Here's to a more hopeful, more thoughtful, and less fraught 2018.

sherwin.

MONTREAL CHRISTMAS CAROLOKE SINGALONG 2017 - DEC 12, 2017
RSVP HERE: https://www.facebook.com/events/1942354832684646/

So, as some of you know, every year I like to record a drunken karaoke album of myself singing Christmas carols. Then I burn a CD, come up with a silly cover, and then hand them out to friends and family as gifts because it is a riot and a hoot.

Then a couple years back, I got tired of singing by myself, and decided to create an event where we could all sing together! And you came out! And we recorded a whole album in one night and I sent everyone a link to download the enormous album we sang into being.

AND THIS YEAR WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN!

On the night of December 12th, come sing it loud, proud, and in a crowd as we cut an album for 2017.

For those of you who are coming for the first time, it will be a cro
wd karaoke sort of situation where we play the music and project the lyrics and everyone sings drunkenly together. The whole thing will be recorded, and I will take the audio home and cut tracks and make up some cover art and then everyone will get a download link they can distribute to family and friends. We can cut a Christmas album in three hours of drunk, raucous singing!

And if you're curious what the whole thing sounds like, here is just one of the tracks we recorded a year ago: https://soundcloud.com/inconsolablecat/029-oholynight

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for OCTOBER! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

Hi Lovelies!

So, lots of strange happenings this coming month.

In some sad news, in Sept. we did our last Toronto Strip Spelling Bee at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Yes, after 6+ years at Buddies, we've had to say goodbye. I will always be grateful to them for giving us a chance to hold this body-positive, wordy and dirty extravaganza there. And to my co-host Sofi, who kept me on an even-keel as I lurched into drunken lushness, I will always be grateful to your smarts, your loveliness, your sharpness. I will always be basecamp to your Mount Cleverest. The truth is, I needed to bring out double the audience I was averaging in order to justify Buddies giving us a Friday night, and I just wasn't able to do that. Maybe I should have advertised more. Recruited. Hustled more. But I have never been someone who wanted to pester people with an event. I see other promoters posting their events in groups every single day, and I just think that's too much. All I have to say is that if you love an event, go out to it every chance you can. Drag your friends to them. Even if an event looks successful, sometimes they are under unofficial "probation" and can die without notice. Especially the events that are odd. The Beyonce Tribute Nights you don't have to worry about. Strip Spelling Bee might return in Toronto, but I don't know when. And it will definitely be at another venue.

In other news, I am inaugurating a NEW event this month, called THIS BOOK IS MY BEST FRIEND! And it's a book recommendation night in Montreal. And we are still looking for recommenders. If you are a reader, and have a favourite book in the world, and think you can speak about it for 3 minutes in front of a group of fellow book-lovers, please email me at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com with MTLBOOK in your subject heading. Tell me what book you love, and if your book doesn't overlap with someone else's,  I will add you to the group of recommenders!

Finally, I am launching a new book myself this fall, and I have a special section later on in this newsletter with all the details, and some special events in Atlantic Canada. Montreal and Toronto launches are coming soon!

Once again, thank you for subscribing to this email group, and for coming to these events. You help me see the strange I want to see in the world. You make this place less lonely for the late-onset awesome.

sherwin.

If you are a reader, you have a favourite book.
Or books.
It's just what happens.

This event celebrates that, and exposes you to more favourites.
Over 2 hours, 20 ordinary readers spend 3 minutes each passionately endorsing an extraordinary book, letting you in on why that particular book is their best friend.
And the best part is – that book can become your best friend too.
That's the beauty of books.

Come listen to a passel of book-lovers. And if you have a book that you are eager to advocate in front of a warm and wondrous audience, email the organizer at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com with MTLBOOK in the subject heading, letting me know which book is your best friend, and I will save you a spot in the line

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for SEPTEMBER! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

Hi Lovelies!

So about two weeks ago I did an experimental event in Montreal called MY BAD: A SORRYtelling Event. And it went really good! There was a warm energy in the room for it, and it was very human, and illuminating. In fact, it went so well that I am eager to bring it to Toronto at some point this fall. But I would need more Sorrytellers. Do you live in Toronto? Do you have an apology you would like to express with a story behind it? Please email me at inconsolablecat (at) hotmail (dot) com with TOOBAD as the subject, and a brief description of what you might be sorry about. When I get enough folks to be a part, I'll find a charming venue to host us and we can make it happen!

Other than that, I've been relaxing a lot this summer. Reading old Star Wars novels. There was a time in my life where I felt I should read the "good" books. The ones that tackled major themes. But now I just read what I want and feel no guilt. I've always felt that getting older is great because you no longer have guilty pleasures. That is - you still have all your pleasures, you just stop feeling guilty about any of them.

Thanks again everyone for being part of this list, and for listening.

sherwin.

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for MAY-JUNE! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

We have a raft of new events for MAY-JUNE for you, but first a couple of housekeeping things!

(1) For those of you who don't know, I have started a Patreon Page! Patreon is basically ongoing crowdfunding, and I started it in order to keep admission prices stable to my events. I am always fighting rising venue rental and other costs, and if you like my events, please consider tipping me a few bucks every month. It helps me continue bringing quirky events to you. PLUS, if you donate $5 or more, you get access to my event planning podcast, "Late-Onset Awesome", where I go over all the steps of putting on quirky events and I tell stories about my last decade of doing so. First FOUR episodes are already up! Later on, I will begin interviewing all the other event-producers I know about their events! Please consider dropping us a few bucks if these events have ever touched you. It will help us greatly to keep being the strange we want to see in the world.

(2) ALSO, are you an exhibitionist who wants to show the world how you have sex but don't want it all over the internet? I am trying to organize another weird event, but need participants. I already have a few for both Toronto and Montreal, but need more if I'm actually gonna go ahead and book a venue. All the details right here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/sherwin-sullivan-tjia/a-diy-porno-film-festival/10155048007079459/

thanks for reading! and thank you for subscribing.

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for APRIL-MAY! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

Hello lovelies! So this has been a crazy time for me. Lots of news. So much so I am going to break them down into bullet points, even though that's very stiff shirt and PowerPointish.

* I've started to Instagram! I resisted it for a long time. It took me years just to get used to Facebook. But there you go. If you are on instagram, grab me on the 'gram right here! (Isn't that what the kids say these days?)

*I am bringing Queer Slowdance back to Montreal for a special event! People have asked me over the years why I do a MIXED Slowdance in Montreal, but a QUEER Slowdance in Toronto. It's because when I had them segregated in Montreal, I couldn't get enough of either group out to pay the venue rental fee. So I combined them, and that worked in bringing enough people out to make the night work. But the last Montreal Queer Slowdance was 3 years ago. I'm ready to try it again. If you have queer friends in Montreal, please let them know about it!

* I was just in Austin, Texas! The Fusebox Performance Art Festival brought me down to enact a Cardboard Fort Night event! Extended Play Journal interviewed me about it, and you can watch a 2-minute clip of what it was like to walk through the event right here!

* A couple weeks ago we had our Toronto Queer Slowdance PROM edition and Bryanna Reilly was once again our lovely photographer, and here are the awesome shots she took!

* I have a saucy event in Montreal that I have teamed up with the Blue Metropolis Literary Festival to enact called the Naughty Bits Book Club, and it's a reading of all the scandalous bits you might have encountered in various works of literature growing up. We are blessed to have the multiple award-winning Ann-Marie MacDonald as one of our readers, as well as Canada's current Poet Laureate, George Elliott Clarke! Holy shit.

* Finally, I have started a Patreon Page! Patreon is basically ongoing crowdfunding, and I started it in order to keep admission prices stable to my events. I am always fighting rising venue rental and other costs, and if you like my events, please consider tipping me a few bucks every month. It helps me continue bringing quirky events to you. PLUS, if you donate $5 or more, you get access to my event planning podcast, "Late-Onset Awesome", where I go over all the steps of putting on quirky events. First episode is already up, and I also go over the finer points of every individual event I have ever put on. Later on, I will begin interviewing all the other event-producers I know about their events! Please consider dropping us a few bucks if these events have ever touched you. It will help us greatly to keep being the strange we want to see in the world.

thanks for reading! and thank you for subscribing.

♥ QUIRKY EVENTS for APRIL! - Slowdances, Strip Spelling Bees! ♥

A few months ago I had this idea. It's sorta stupid, but it's also hilarious. The idea is to fill a room full of balloons, a few layers deep, and then set a Roomba going underneath it. For those of you who don't know what a Roomba is, it's one of those things that look like mini manhole-cover, but it's a robot, and it's also a vaccuum cleaner. And when you turn it on, it starts zigzagging across a floor, sucking up dust and crumbs.

Anyway, the idea was that the Roomba would bump the balloons as it made its way around, and for people watching the balloons, all they would see is that something was underneath, moving around. It could be a cat for all they knew. I imagined that there would be this beautiful undulation to the balloons. Like waves.

It's probably not going to turn out that way. It might be jittery and erratic. The balloons might fly like startled birds. Or the Roomba might be confused by all the objects in its way.

On Facebook, I asked everyone I knew if anyone had a Roomba, and a bunch of people responded. I took their names down because I figured that at some point, I might need to ask to borrow their Roombas.

Anyways, the idea haunted me. I wanted to see if it would really transpire the way I imagined. I don't know if this is art or what. It's dumb fun is what it is. I would call it ROOMBALLOON. How funny is that?

So I would need an empty room, hundreds of balloons, and a Roomba. Simple.

Last week I met with the Mainline Theatre. They have a street-level gallery, and I asked if they had any nights free. They gave me a tentative date in May. Soon I'm going to ask my friends if I can borrow their Roomba. They might say no. Roombas are pretty expensive. (If anyone reading this has a Roomba they might be willing to loan me for an art project, please email me at inconsolablecat@hotmail.com)!

I might need help the day of blowing up balloons. In fact, I'm pretty sure of it. Friends who aren't allergic to latex.

Anyway, this is how my mind works. I have a silly idea. But then I start to imagine how I might make it real. And then I do all the tiny little steps needed to make the silly solid. It might not work. It might not happen. I've had to cancel events before. My Queer Speed-Spooning event for example. The venue was booked. I was all prepared to go out and buy the inflatable beds. But I couldn't get enough folks to sign up for it. What are you going to do? Sometimes ideas die because I can't find enough water to keep it alive. But I feel Roomballoon is doable.

Anyway, if it happens, I'll post links to what it looks like here!
Thanks for reading about my weird notions, and these quirky events!

Okay. Without further ado, here are the...
